Walking through the forest, ---- ?

“Walking through the forest, the traveler saw the moon above the trees.” এই বাক্যে participle clause (“Walking through the forest”) সঠিকভাবে মূল subject সঙ্গে মিলে গিয়েছে। participle clause মানে – বাক্যের শুরুতে দেওয়া অংশটি যেই কাজটা বা অবস্থা বর্ণনা করছে, সেটি বাক্যের মূল subject (এখানে “the traveler”) যে কাজ বা ঘটনা এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত, তা স্পষ্ট করে।

যদি বলা হয় “Walking through the forest, the path of the traveler was moonlit,” তাহলে subject mismatch হবে, কারণ participle clause অনুযায়ী যে ব্যক্তি বন দিয়ে হেঁটে যাচ্ছে (the traveler), তার সাথেই ক্রিয়া যুক্ত থাকা উচিত; কিন্তু এখানে “the path” বসে আছে। আবার “Walking through the forest, the moon lit up the leaves of the trees” বললে participle clause এর actor ও ক্রিয়াকর্তা ভিন্ন– participle clause এ হেঁটে যাওয়া traveler কিন্তু বাক্যে কাজ করছে moon, ফলে dangling modifier তৈরি হয়। “Walking through the forest, the moon appeared like a luminous ball” বললেও participle clause এর কার্যে গড়ন ভিন্ন, কারণ walker এর পরিবর্তে moon কে খালি participle clause এর agent হিসেবে ধরা হচ্ছে, যা grammatical error।

অন্যদিকে “Walking through the forest, the traveler saw the moon above the trees” এ participle clause এবং main clause একসঙ্গে coherent ভাবে কাজ করেছে। participle clause এ traveler-ই হেঁটে যাচ্ছে, এবং main clause এ সেই traveler-ই moon দেখছেন। অর্থ ও কাঠামো– উভয় দিকেই মিল থাকায় এই বাক্যটি সঠিক।

পুনঃসার: participle clause এবং মূল clause–এর মধ্যে agent বা subject-কে মেলাতে হবে; এর ফলে dangling modifier এড়িয়ে সঠিক, স্বচ্ছ বাক্য গঠন হয়।
